Voices from the Child Welfare System: Community Engagement to Address Systemic Barriers and Improve Outcomes for Youth Leaving Care

In 2015, WoodGreen Community Services identified a significant gap in support for young people aging out of Toronto’s child welfare system. With a strong background in innovative, wrap-around programs, WoodGreen engaged key stakeholders in the child welfare sector to explore ways to enhance support for these youth. In September 2016, in collaboration with Covenant House Toronto and with backing from Toronto Children’s Aid Societies and the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth, WoodGreen secured funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This funding supported a one-year, community-based action research project aimed at developing an evidence-based model to improve outcomes for youth transitioning out of care. The initiative sought to leverage existing resources and expertise to create a more effective support system, ensuring that young people leaving care had better access to the tools and opportunities needed for a stable and successful transition into adulthood.
